SMARTstart helps Bow Valley circus troupe learn new business skills

Two years ago, Basia Banas and her co-founder Hannah Antonsen performed their first Halloween cabaret show in Canmore. It was the start of their business, Beau Valley Circus, an eclectic showcase of hula-hoopers, jugglers, drag artists, fire-performers, and dancers. In the years since, Basia has been curious about how to take the business to the next level.

“We are artists who do weird and wacky things,” said Basia. “But we know that learning about finance and business operations is how we can keep the Circus sustainable.”

After joining Bow Valley Pride Network’s SMARTstart program in February 2025, Basia has gained the business know-how she needs to keep the Circus on stage. The workshops, led by professionals in the Bow Valley, have taught her about accounting, business planning, and structures like non-profits and corporations.

“The program allows us to identify our business goals and illuminates the pathways we can take to move forward,” says Basia. “And it’s even more special that it’s tailored to Queer folks. SMARTstart helps us uplift artists through the support of our local Queer community.”

Applications are now open for the Fall 2025 cohort.
